Newspaper Lead

Gonzalez gives De Aza the starting job at center field

BY CLARK SPENCER

JUPITER - Alejando De Aza was such a bully as a child he stopped playing sandlot baseball to appease hia mother. He would beat up the other boys, oe throw rocks at them, and their parents would come knocking on the De Aza door demanding apologies. "I used to be such a bad boy," De Aza said.

This lead was an anectdotial lead because it focused on De Aza. However, it wasn't just your typical sports story. The lead could catch a non sports fan's attention because it was interesting, not just sports stats or anything like that.

It's anecdotal when the story uses a person in the lead as an example of what the story is about. In this case, the story is about De Aza. So you're right in identifying the elements of an anecdotal lead, but in this case, it's more of a backgrounder to get into the story about Aza.
